Moving windows xp to different hardware

Your best option is to virtualize the system and run it on hyper-v or some other virtualization technology using new hardware. You may be as well off getting a License for XP on eBay you can still get them there.

Simply put, it will come down to drivers. Most importantly, will be the SATA controller. On your new machine, you will have to check all the hardware devices to see if there is a Windows XP compatible driver. You could get lucky, as some older, cheaper computers use generic off-the-shelf chipsets that have been around forever.

ALternatively, you can virtualize your XP install. Sign up to join this community. The best answers are voted up and rise to the top. Any new hardware is not likely to run XP at all. Thanks to everyone who responded. All answers were helpful. The one that might worry me is "Rolls back any hotfixes, service packs, and Microsoft Internet Explorer upgrades to their base versions. Can't you ask Dell here if they have an old mobo from a for you? Doesn't have to be a new one as long as it still boots. If it's that a mission critical system i'd have a spare mainboard available somewhere.

Zebra Computers is an IT service provider. This may allow it to boot. You could also use disk2vhd and work on the system in a virtual environment, but doesn't solve the problem. But the question I have is; why dont you just buy another similar motherboard? Or use an identical computer. Replace the capacitors that are affected. Get the machine to boot and create a p2v and then move your services from that VM to a newer OS. Capacitors don't have to be exact just get ones that are slightly larger same voltage and have a couple of test goes with the soldering iron if your not savvy.

I replace capacitors on motherboards all the time at my shop, and sometimes for video cards and power supplies as well. I commonly replace uF caps with , and with , but I wouldn't replace a uF with a uF.

Have you tried using something like Acronis with universal restore you might be able to pull an image and lay it on the new machine. I'd try Acronis Universal Restore, which I've used successfully in the past to transfer a hard drive image to a new or different computer.

We tried a bunch of things today including installing the print console software on a newer machine with no success. I also had no luck tracking down a GX or motherboard locally. On the suggestion of replacing the capacitors, I have done that before but am no where near what anyone could call experienced. All my solder jobs are pretty rough. OS X is so portable it clones between hardware with no fuss and runs off just about anything. Thanks again everyone, as a one-man-show I really do appreciate the support and ability to get fast feedback on the weekend.

And the 's I have at home courtesy of Dell's online shop via eBay are all running Win 7. That said By the way, she's an aviation fan!

Screen Recorder. Transfer Products. File Management. The latest version has a mini-xp boot o. Again thanks a million. Thank you so much for posting this.

Exactly what I was looking for. This was after trying five different methods that fail. The above method is also a good way to repair a crashed windows installation. If it is a software problem you can use this method on the same hardware. But be sure you have the right CD and Product key. With a hardware problem, for example some bad blocks, try to get a copy onto a new HDD and then repair using the install method.
