In other words anything shot with a tape based camcorder. If you have to buy a dongle good luck finding an old enough version. This thing is very specific about what it "sees" and just because it's on the WD list doesn't mean it will work. Chances are the one you buy will be a newer version than the one WD tested and certified The box gets pretty hot and there is no internal fan so not sure how well that's going to work out in the long run.
Overall Review: If you are lazy and never edited camcorder footage or if you did the editing in any common Windows NLE program and saved the project in the standard AVI-DV format this box isn't for you. If a wireless connection is important this box isn't for you.
If you have a lot of video in wmv, xvid, mpeg 1, 2 or 4, AVC, m2t or mov then you will be stunned by the ease of use and great picture. But forget the Wi-Fi feature.
Even got it to play a funky mp4 off a cheap cell phone and it even made the x 15fps video look half decent. Cons: For me the big one is no searching on Netflix. You have an Instant Que that you can add movies to, but you have to use a PC to do it. You also get a few categories that seem to swap in and out at random with roughly 50 titles to choose from. And there are a few medium to small things. We have about 50GB of music, mostly albums but about 4, singles in a separate folder.
Most of the time this is OK, but the OSD sometimes will freeze while paging through the list and you have to go back to the home screen and wait a few seconds before trying again. And there's no way to create playlists without a PC. Finally, the OSD is not very intuitive. For me it's fine - but my family doesn't care what a local drive or network share is - they just want to watch TV! Not enough hard disk space! Overall Review: Purchased as a late X-mas gift for my two housemates - my brother liked it so much he slept with the remote for a week!
Don't let the cons scare you - this really is a great little device, especially for the price. My recommendation if you get this is to look into the WDLXTV alternate firmware - it's easy to install and you gain a few features in the bargain.
Like Shoutcast, Youtube freedom and a few others. I even have my own semiprivate Icecast station streaming into my living room - quite nice! Pros: Plays almost any media format, had this model since it first came out..
I did buy him the newer model of this product.. A very good product for WD Overall Review: Definately a keeper.. Sold by: Newegg Shipped by Newegg. This item is currently out of stock and it may or may not be restocked.
Out of Stock. Amazed at how small it is for what it does. Can use Logitech Universal Remotes for control.
Note: Apparently the key sometimes missed with this method is that the computer uses presentation mode. I might opt for the WD TV box to free up my computer in the evenings, but I have absolutely no problem watching anything my computer can play. Alternatively, I might buy another laptop to stash next to the tv, with a bigger hard drive next time. Too bad western digital has not released a firmware version yet to fix these problems. So choose wisely. By chance do you know if one can stop in the middle of a movie video file and pick up again at that spot at a later time?
If so, does such work with more than one file, so that a number of movies can be watched over time? Well I just picked it up for I really want to get it hooked up to my network using usb ethernet. Looks like fun to tinker with. And yes it's Canadian pricing. I am going to buy one next paycheck! I think I will rip all my home videos to my external hard drive too, to easily have access to stuff that is currently a pain. What a great toy to kill any free time I have!
The Lego Rebel Trooper looks scared. Files can be re-muxed, transcoded, whatever. Deal with it. Where do you live and are there any special gates or locks blocking the access path to your trash bins?
Temper tantrum much? This device supposedly has better file compatibility than most. I wish WD would make a big sister product with the missing features. This would be a really great device if it had Still, the price is attractive, and combined with a decent sized flash drive and sneakernet, I could see this being very useful. Strange article. Am I right in that it assumes you know that the input is external storage?
That would be more logical but if you wanted to, or the arrangement dictated it, you could go all crazy with a super-long USB cable with active extensions.
Internal drives while not a terrible idea in some cases for this without networking options is a bad one. Plug it into your PC, then back to your TV. Transferring large files over USB would be time consuming. Now had this device had networking capabilities, my stance on this device having a hard drive would change. Just plug in a thumbdrive or USB hard drive, and start playing videos. Not every play on words is a pun.
This does allow you to play Iso files. I have star trek dvd isos that I use regularly. There is no menu support though. It will just play through the dvd files in the order they are in the iso. I own one of these, they are pretty sweet and versatile. It looks like other features include internet program streaming and DVR functionality. Can it take an external BluRay drive? Before I recommend something I always consider first whether it is something I can teach my mother or father to use, I think the Popcorn Hour is brilliant for my purposes I use it with a NAS , but my father or mother would never be able to use it.
Maybe a future higher-end version? One can hope…. Took the entire night!! The choice would have been much harder. True, but that external drive can be hidden if you are able to depending on the setup. The lack of network makes this really painful. How are you going to get media on the device? Unplug the hard drive that is connected to it, plug that into a computer, copy media to the drive, unplug from computer, plug it back into the device?
That said, my xbox does what I need to. I second that. I store my media on my FreeNAS in the basement so i need to stream it through the network. See details. Located in:.
